Move from Shemakha to Baku

The entire family moves from Shemakha to Baku and all property of the family was “nationalized” by the new Soviet authorities. In the early 1940s Haji started to date his future spouse Aliya khanum. However her family was reluctant to give approval for the marriage as Haji’s only source of income at that time was performing music. This set Haji on a path to acquire a second profession and he set out on a journey to become a surgeon. This step was not welcomed by his mentors of that time, one of which was Uzeyir Hajibeyli, who personally requests the head of the Medical University to release the young student as in Uzeyir bey’s opinion Haji’s second profession will have a detrimental effect on his future as a musician. However, the head of the Medical University rejects the request. In 1944 Haji married Aliya khanum and they had three children, with Nadir Mammadov born as the first child in the family, followed by Tahir and Jamila. In 18th of May 1963 Haji was awarded a degree as the Folk Artist Musician of Azerbaijan Republic. Haji was known for being a teacher and mentor for future well-known folk musicians such as Alim Gasimov and Ramiz Quliyev. Up to 1973 the family lived in the Azneft area of Baku and then moved to a new building in the Khagani area.

Mr. Haji Mammadov developed his own unique style of performance on the Tar, where he was enriching traditional Azerbaijani folk music and was widely acknowledged as the founder of classical European music performed on the tar. Mr. Haji Mammadov was a man of great character. He continuously worked on his professional levels both in music and medical science. Over the years of his professional career, he was a founder of the Hospital N5 in Baku city. He spent every day reading books of European and national authors. In 1981, August 2nd, following a long disease Haji Muallim passed away and was buried in the second Alley of the Honorary cemetery in Baku. He is remembered as a strong personality but with a humble character. Despite numerous achievements and awards he received he was always known for being sincere, kind and fair. Haji Mammadov kept and conveyed through many years of his life his magnificent soul, his passion for art, music, honesty and love of his country and friends. He shared his art with other countries, displaying the wealth of Azerbaijan musical culture when he performed in many countries including France, Belgium, Tunisia, Iran, Lebanon amongst others.
