Haji Mammadov was an Azerbaijan Folk Artist, as well the head of the 5th Hospital in Baku city. Mr. Mammadov developed his own style of the Tar (Azerbaijan national instrument) performance and is known to be a founder of the western classical music performance on the Tar in the world. He was forced to start his career at 5 years to help his siblings during the famine and repressions of the Soviet occupation of the Azerbaijan Republic.
The family has been well known and respected in the region and was active in various economic and political processes as well as owning extensive land in Shemakha. The new authorities unleashed their anger on the remaining members of the family. Haji did his best to earn something to keep his brother and sisters fed. He was noticed and eventually promoted by a coryphée of Azerbaijani Classical Music, Mr. Uzeyir Hajibayov at the very early stage.
Uzeyir Bey immediately saw vast potential in the young man and sent several recommendations to help Haji. At the age of 5 Haji performed in the State Musical Conservatorium Hall in Baku. Since 1949 he was a soloist of the State Philharmonic Hall. Years later he was admitted to the State Medical Institute and became a surgeon. He accompanied singers such as Bulbul, Seyid Shushinski, Zulfu Adigozalov, and toured throughout the world, including Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Iran, Syria, Algeria, and others. Mr. Mammadov received several honorary awards from the government.
Haji was a moral and spiritual head of our family, and his views and legacy has been passed to the next generations irrespective of where we live in this big and simultaneously small world. Emin (his grandson) arranged a program on CBC channel on 22nd of April 2021 devoted to Haji Mammadov on his 101st jubilee. The event was attended by several known national music performers, including Alim Qasimov and others.
